Write a paragraph giving an example of someone judging their own experience by some outward sign instead of using their own feeling and judgement, like the old man in the story “The old man’s milk”.

– final essay: choose ANY TOPIC OR TOPICS COVERED THIS SEMESTER, including your two movie reports, but remember that the topic is BRITISH HISTORY

  • 500- 800 words (not including References)
  • feel free to add illustrations, maps, pictures, etc.

  • correct academic format (APA style, double-spaced, cover sheet,  Reference page, etc.)

Today’s class

Presentations by remaining students. Generally speaking, the quality of presentations was better than last year’s. I will give feedback next week.

Re-write your draft 1 and email it to me as soon as possible. I will send it back to you with some final comments. Then please re-write, print out and bring your final essay to class next week.

Today’s class

Quick review of outline:

  1. Introduction – list all the books you read in this class this semester
  2. Body paragraph 1 – introduce the book title, author, date of publication, setting, main characters, story summary (short, 3-4 sentences)
  3. Body paragraph 2 – the main themes or ideas of the story
  4. Body paragraph 3 – your personal reaction
  5. Conclusion – repeat the main points of paragraphs 2, 3 and 4.
  6. Bibliography (using APA style)

Review of essay outline:

  1. Introduction: movie and book titles and dates, + why you chose them.
  2. Movie:
    1. genre of movie.
    2. Story summary – main characters and main events
    3. Director, main actors (if famous),
    4. Main ideas
    5. (Original story / writer)
  3. Book:
    1. Same as movie
  4. Historical background
    1. Make it clear whether you are writing about the history that is seen IN the movie or what happened when the movie was made.
    2. Give dates for events and people, and any other important information, e.g. President Kennedy, 35th president of the USA from 1961-63, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22nd, 1963.
  5. Conclusion: summary of what you learned, and your personal opinion.
  6. Bibliography in APA style

Choose a topic from the textbook that you have not chosen yet. E.g.

  • Music (jazz, rock’n’roll, country, etc)
  • Cities in films (you can choose one city or one movie or write about several)
  • San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • New Orleans

Write at least 2 pages of A4, in academic format, using photos, maps, illustrations, etc. Make sure you define your subject, and explain why or how your topic is important.
