Homework

  2. (For July 12th, in 2 weeks): Choose from the list a different British history movie  to watch and prepare a short  oral  spoken, nor written) presentation on.

Homework

  • Check the APA style guidelines for a book reference: http://bit.ly/APABooks4WS2
  • Find the information for “The Giving Tree” by Silverstein.
  • Type it up in the APA style and bring it to class next week.

Today’s class

  • Watched key scenes from the movie “The Wizard of Oz”.
  • Wrote down key quotes from this famous story:
    • “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore!”
    • “Follow the yellow-brick road.”
    • “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”
  • Found the publishing information for the movie and the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and wrote them in APA style.

Announcement

I want to have a copy of your recent Powerpoint presentation. Will those students who did not attend Saturday’s class please bring their USB with their “book and movie” presentation to class next Friday (Dec. 21st), please? Thank you. 

Homework

Redo your book and movie presentation. Makeup class will be on Saturday Dec. 15th  (not Dec. 8th as I announced in class.) For presentation guidelines, see last week’s blog post here.

Everyone must do their book and movie presentation twice. If you did your book-and-movie presentation Nov 30th or earlier, please do it again on Dec. 14th or 15th (Saturday, makeup class).

  • You must
    • include historical background and
    • say what readers can learn about American history from the movie or the book (or both).
    • Give the key points.
      • A point is “the important or essential thing”.
      • A key point is “the most important or essential thing” about the movie and the book.

Homework

  1. (Finish the timeline for chapter 2 and chapter 3 if you did not finish in class).
  2. Read chapter 3.
    1. Pick a topic that interests you for your next presentation.
    2. Do some research (the information in the textbook is probably not enough for a good presentation).
    3. Prepare your presentation.

  1. Checking the answers to textbook exercises pp 25-27.
  2. One-to-one conferencing to discuss presentations.
  3. Read chapter 3 and choose a topic.

Today’s class

  1. Dictation
    1. About the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts
  2. List what you think the Pilgrims brought with them to America.
  3. Some of the things they actually brought:
    1. a sundial, candle snuffers, a drum, a trumpet, a complete history of Turkey, a Bible in Turkish.
    2. One man (William Mullins) brought 126 pairs of shoes and 13 pairs of boots.
    3. They brought no cow, horse or fishing line.
    4. Among the professions were two tailors, a printer, several merchants, a silk worker, a shopkeeper and a hatter. No farmers.
    5. Six died in the first two weeks, eight in December, 17 more in February, 13 in March.
    6. By April, when the Mayflower went back to England, there were just 54 people left, half of them children.
  4. Two questions:
    1. How do we know what happened to the colonists?
    2. How did the colonists communicate with the native Americans?
