Homework:

Read chapter 2, especially the second half, and try and answer the questions at the end.

Today’s class:

1. Presentation about the first half of chapter 2, “What is Language?”
2. Write a summary of the presentation content and a comment about the presenters.
3. Discuss these 3 questions with classmates, then write your answer (in English):
   1. Why study linguistics in English?
   2. Why give presentations in English?
   3. Why use an English text?
4. A representative from each group reported her group’s answers to the class.
5. Sheffner’s answers to the 3 questions:
   1. To improve your English skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening, especially your academic vocabulary.
   2. To divide the labour (分業); to teach your classmates about the content and meaning of parts of the text (handout); and to teach classmates key vocabulary, concepts and names (of people and places).
   3. To learn how to talk (and write) about linguistics in English. Without a common textbook, this would be more difficult.
