One of the results of the Renaissance was the Scientific Revolution in Europe - the Enlightenment, Copernicus, Hooke, Boyle, Galileo, Newton, etc., etc. It was the beginning (or renaissance) of science in Europe.

But Japan did not go through this or anything similar. The closest thing might be the Meiji Restoration.

To rectify this lacuna in my students' knowledge and experience, and to give them some background to the history of academic writing, I prepared this handout. (See here for the companion handout "History of Academic Writing").
