Read pages 138-9 in the textbook.

Today’s class:

  • Presentation about pages 137-8 (family life”.
  • Discussion about why the man was considered “master of the household”.
  • To answer this question, we followed these steps:
    1. What does “master” mean?
      1. We decided it meant – leader, owner
    2. What does “household” mean?
      1. The dictionary told us it means 世帯、家庭
    3. Where might this idea that “the man is master of the household” come from?
      1. One possibility is the Bible.
        1. Please read Genesis 1, 26-29 (and you can read a Japanese version here)
        2. Please read 1 Cor. 11:3 (this is a letter from the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians; see the Japanese translation here)
      2. Another possibility is that it comes from the simple fact that men are in general stronger and taller than women.
        1. From this, it is logical to think that the man would be the natural choice to lead the family because in early times, physical strength was necessary to find food, to build shelter and to protect the family.

  1. Hello. Mr Sheffner.

In AS1 wk5,I was thinking about men and women’s connection over once more, for example, why men is good position in society than women.
Class memebers had several and indivisual answers, so this’s interesting for me. And then, I suppose this class was very lively. That’s good.

    Thank you.

  2. Hello!
In this class, I understood about family life in England. Especially, I could know that the women were so weaker than the men in this period. Since I had this class, I had known that wife should not work and they must stay home everyday. But little by little, Women could join to society by the law. I thought that women are very strong and they work very hard in various department now. It is so nice step. In this topic, I could have interest so much.

  3. Thank you very much for your feedback. Any feedback is very precious. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write.

  4. Hello,

Yesterday’s presentation was used powerpoint and so great! They also told us about the information which isn’t written in the textbook. So I was able to be interested in British family life. I would like to do my best for my presentation.

Also, I was able to understand about discussion. I wish women and men were equal.

I can’t enjoy taking part in discussion because I don’t have any confidence in my English. Moreover, I can’t often correspond the meanings of the English that teacher said.

    Thank you.
