June/July meeting

Our June meeting was held July 5th. Our next meeting will be August 2nd at 15:15 in Rifuan as usual. We may have some new visitors.

We read and discussed chapter 5 of “How an Economy Grows and how it Crashes”.

We discussed what to read next, but could not come to any decision. Please leave your suggestion in the comments.

The titles suggested are below:

  1. 84, Charing Cross Road 1,595 yen. 112 pages.   Japanese translation 2,808 yen   http://amzn.to/2tpOil2
  2. The Book Thief: 10th Anniversary Edition  1,372 yen. 576 pages.
    1. Okuda-san’s comment: “I bought The Book Thief, which consists of 536 pages.I read  about 50 pages so far and find the book is relatively easy to read, and more importantly, very enjoyable, so much fun to read.” Japanese translation is a little expensive , from 3,000 yen up. http://amzn.to/2ut9QlI
  3. Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything  1,054 yen. 384 pages.  Japanese translation 1 yen, 568 pages.  http://amzn.to/2tTjE6V

Also mentioned was The Signature of All Things 592 pages, 919 yen.  This does not appear to have been translated into Japanese yet.

  1. I vote for the Book Thief. Even though it is very long, it has received a lot of good reviews and seems really interesting. Actually, Okudasan’s comments were convincing.

  2. When I wrote a little about The Book Thief to Mr. Sheffner, I thought I’d read it for my personal pleasure as I thought the book would be probably opted out because of pages and Japanese translation. I’m glad to know two members voted for this book so far. Here I’d like to add something. I
wrote “’relatively’ easy to read”, which means it was not so difficult as I had imagined, “relatively” not “simply easy.” I don’t understand some German words used in the dialogues of the characters and I don’t think I understand all (of course)but still I enjoy reading on little by little on my own (so far). Anyway, this book is going to be one of my all-time favorites. I’ll be happy if I can share this book with the members.

    1. I understood,”relatively easy ” is not so easy, rather harder. But I want to make sure how fun,and enjoyable it is by myself. And I might be able to understand the contents, if I share it with members.
Though many pages and expensive Japanese edition are the big matter.
My second thought, I’d leave Marc-sensei which book to choose.

  3. I am for the “The Book Thief”. I think a recommendation of the actual reader of the book is convincing. I’m a bit worried about doing without translation because of the price, though.

  4. I’d like to read “The Signature of All Things” in order to refind something in my daily life, but the problem is no Japanese version.
On the second thought I’d like to choose” 84, Charing Cross Road”, because it will be fun to find some difference how to write letters between British and Americans, and the story is short.

  5. Okuda-san’s comment about The Book Thief,”The book is relatively easy,so much fun and enjoyable to read.”has attracted me. And the picture on the cover is nice.
So I’d like to read “The Book Thief “for the next textbook.
