Homework

  • Start writing your essay.
  • (Email me your essay title if you were absent today.)
  • Your essay should
    • be between 800-1,500 words
    • be in academic format (double-spaced),
    • have at least 5 paragraphs (introduction, body and conclusion)
    • have a bibliography – a list of all the books, articles, websites, movies, videos, etc. you read or watched in your research.

Today’s class

  1. Why write an essay about US history in English?
    1. To encourage you to think about the reasons why things happened in history.
    2. An essay is not a report: it expresses your opinions (with reasons) or it tries to persuade the reader to accept a new idea or point of view.
    3. It forces you to clarify your thoughts and to learn how to express your thoughts clearly in English.
  2. Basic essay format
    1. Review the format in the MLA Style guidebook.
      1. Notice: double-spacing, nice big indents, no blank lines between paragraphs, and the format for the bibliography.

  1. Answer the multiple-choice questions for chapter 13
  2. No summary writing homework. Start writing your essay instead.
  3. Choose a topic for your essay:
    1. Write in detail about one of the characters in “The Magician’s Nephew” (TMN).
    2. Write in detail about one of the settings in TMN: Narnia, Charn, Uncle Andrew’s study, London, the Wood Between the Worlds.
    3. Write about another Narnia story and compare with TMN (similarities and differences)
    4. Write about the similarities and differences between TMN and the Bible (Genesis – the creation of the world and the temptation of Eve)

Today’s class:

  1. Checked the answers to chapter 12.
  2. Read the key points of chapter 11:
    1. Aslan talks to Digory and asks him if he is ready to undo the wrong he has done. Digory says he is. Aslan does not force Digory. Digory must do this of his own free will.
    2. Digory is shocked to see Aslan crying real tears. Aslan understands Digory’s sorrow.
    3. Aslan does not punish Digory for bringing Jadis into Narnia. Instead, he gives him the chance to “put things right” 正常な状態にする[戻す]
    4. Polly volunteers to accompany Digory. She does not have to go, but she wants to go.
    5. Digory offers Polly the chance to go home and eat. He is thoughtful and chivalrous. He has changed.

Homework:

Choose the topic for your final essay and start writing.

  • Final essay should be 800-1000 words (excluding the bibliography).
  • The topic can be any topic connected with British history in the 19th century.
  • Choose something you are interested.
  • Choose something you want to find out about.
  • Your essay title should be a question, e.g. “Why did Britain become so rich in the 19th century?”, “Why did prices fall and wages double in the 19th century?” , “Why was compulsory education introduced in Britain?” etc.

Rules for writing:

  1. Don’t use contractions like  “don’t, aren’t, isn’t, it’s, they’re” etc.
  2. Don’t write names in ALL CAPITALS. It’s like shouting.
  3. Don’t being a sentence with “And, So, But, Because”. Use “In addition,” “However,”  “Therefore,”. Or combine with the previous sentence to make a single sentence (and keep the “and, so, but or because”).
  4. Give your opinion with evidence: facts, numbers, etc.
  5. Say where you got the information from.

Writing Strategies II, week 13: January 10th, 2014

Homework:

Write the first draft of your final essay, print it out and bring it to class next week.

Today’s class:

  1. Presentations:
    1. Urabe – Tolkien on Fairy Tales
    2. Yonemori – on Noah’s Ark
    3. Ueda – on chivalry.
  2. What did CS Lewis himself write about fairy tales and about how and why he wrote the Narnia stories? We read some extracts from his short essay “On Three Ways of Writing for Children” and “Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What’s to be Said” (in “On Stories”).
  3. In Noah’s Ark, there were three levels. These levels symbolize the Christian hierarchy. Christians understand the world as made up of hierarchies, and believe it is important to recognize and accept this. They do not believe in absolute equality. For example, God is not equal to humans; He is not on the same level.
  4. We read some extracts from chapter 12:
    1. Aslan gives Digory a chance to “undo the wrong” that he has done (bringing the Witch into Narnia)
    2. Aslan is “not the sort of person one could try to make bargains with.” Digory understands this. I.e., he understands that Aslan is his superior.
    3. Aslan and Digory understand the meaning of grief. “Let us be good to one another”, he says. See also Ephesians 4:32 “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”  互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。

    1. Yamanami on Immersion Language Programs
    2. Nishimori on Semiotics
  2. Does the Immersion Language program really work? What about results? Some people argue it is ineffective and expensive.
  3. Signs and symbols are used particularly by cults and secret societies. Secret societies want their members to accept THEIR meaning for signs and symbols associated with the society. But signs and symbols do not “mean” anything by themselves.
  4. Scottish accents: listen to this song “I’m on my way” by the Proclaimers and see what differences in pronunciation you notice between their pronunciation and standard British English. . And here’s another one with the lyrics on-screen.

Homework:

Re-write your final paper, print out and bring to class next week.

Today’s class:

  1. Mr. Sheffner answered some student questions about chapter 13, in particular,
    1. what do the words mean on the golden gate?
    2. why does Digory enter the garden alone?
    3. why doesn’t Polly tell Digory not to listen to the witch?
  2. Mr. Sheffner talked about the simple Christian message: joy is possible, peace is possible, contentment is possible, for every human being. Joy, peace, contentment come when we are close to Aslan (God) and when we are close to Jesus and when we follow their advice. What Aslan wants for Digory and Polly and all the inhabitants of Narnia is joy – to enjoy Narnia and enjoy the gift of life.
  3. Students read each others’ final papers, in groups of 4 or 5, checking for meaning, format errors and spelling/grammar mistakes.

  3. watched “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” movie, the death and resurrection of Aslan,
  4. watched “The Gospel According to John“, the death and resurrection of Jesus,
  5. wrote about the similarities between the two.
