  1. Choose four claims from chapters 4-7 in the textbook, find detailed evidence for them, and (if necessary) given an explanation.
    • This will be a written paper, in academic format.
    • Choose at least one claim of fact (e.g. Margaret Thatcher was the first woman prime minister of Britain) and at last one claim of judgement (e.g. David Beckham is the most famous English footballer).
    • List all your sources of information.
  2. Collect together all your writings for this class and bring them to the last class, July 28th. You will need them to do your final writing.

  1. For next week July 14th: Choose a claim in chapter 4, find evidence for it and (if necessary) give an explanation.
    • Evidence can be numbers, dates, tables, photos, maps.
    • You can use more than 1 item of evidence to support your claim
    • Tell (or show) your classmates where you got the evidence from (the book, newspaper, magazine, website, etc).
    • Present this information to your classmates orally next week.

  • Write a written version of your presentation
    • use only 1 or 2 graphics from your original presentation
    • email it to me as an attached document (.doc or .docx or .rtf or .odt) by noon Thursday June 29th.
    • Email subject: AS1 Report Your Name
      • File name: AS1_Report1_Your Name
    • Your report should have 3 paragraphs:
      1. details of the book or movie (date of publicaton or release, title, author or director, etc)
      2. a short summary of the story and what kind of movie or story it is (thriller, romance, drama, etc).
      3. what you learned about Britain from this movie or book. You may have to do a little research for background information.

Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation on one of the British books you’ve read or British movies you’ve watched this semester. Your presentation must include:

  • information for your classmates to find the book or movie themselves
  • a brief description of the main points of the story (but don’t tell the ending)
  • what we can learn about Britain from watching/reading this.

  1. Read chapter 3, section “Plauge, Fire and Revolution” and answer these queseitons:
    1. Why were many building srebuilt after 1666?
    2. Why did Parliament invite William of Orange to be king in 1688?
    3. Why was Bonnie Prince Charlie a problem?
    4. What was the Glorious Revolution and why was it glorious?
  2. Read chapter 3, section “England + Wales + Scotland + Ireland” and answer these questions:
    1. What two acts were passed before 1710 and why were they important?
    2. What is 10 Downing Street and why is it important?
    3. When was the Union Jack designed and why?
    4. Whose statue is in Trafalgar Square and why?
  3. Mini-lecture on the causes of the Civil War.
    1. Royalists vs Parliamentarians
    2. the idea of a parliamentary system vs a royal (monarch) system
    3. Thomas Paine was the American who went to Paris in 1790 and argued for the release of the King.
    4. The parliament and the king or queen (monarch) each want more power, so there is a constant battle between them in British history.

  2. Read chapter 3, first 2 sections and answer the following questions
    1. Why did Guy Fawkes plot to kill King James?
    2. Why did the English Civil War happen?
  3. In the 17th-18th centuries, the Barbary pirates captured many white men, women and children and sold them as slaves in Barbary (see map below).
