AS2: week 6, November 10th

Homework

  • Prepare your presentation for Nov. 24th.
  • Presentations can  be made with a poster or with PowerPoint.
  • Each student should present, even if you are doing a group presentation.
  • Each student’s presentation should be 3-5 minutes long.
  • The topic MUST be some topic of USA history.
    • I understand some students would like to research about present-day America – you will have a chance to do that, but not for this presentation.
  • Read chapter 5 of ITHOTR.
    • Request: to help me make suitable reading for you, I ask you to underline or mark on your copy of chapter 5  words and expressions that you need to use a dictionary for, and then show me your copy of the chapter next time. Thanks in advance.

Today’s class

  • Mini-lecture about the first Americans, the first Europeans and why so many Americans feel strongly about the right to have guns.
    • I mentioned the movie “The Seven Samurai”. This is a Japanese class. If you have not seen it, you’re missing something!
    • Here is a commercial for gun control. If you were the woman in this video, would you prefer to have a gun, or just wait for the police?

AS2: week 5, November 3rd

Homework

  • Read chapter 4 of ITHOTR and write something in response. Download it here: ITHOTR_MS_Simplified_ch4
  • Continue with your independent study and start preparing your November presentation. All students must do one presentation by the end of this month. (Nov. 24th). There are only two classes left (10th & 24th).

Today’s class

  1. Mini-lecture about the earliest inhabitants of the Americas.
  2. Student writing about the earliest inhabitants, based on maps and information presented by Sheffner.
    1. Who were the first people who lived in the Americas?
    2. What were the names of some of the tribes?
    3. Where did they come from and how?
  3. What food and/or plants originated in the Americas?
  4. Overview and summary of chapter 3 of ITHOTR.
  5. BONUS: Who built Machu Picchu? Watch this video. Ignore the excitable young man who talks very fast, just look at the pictures of the two very different kinds of stone walls.

  2. There are many ways to use this text to learn about USA history. Some examples were given in class.
  3. Watch the first few scenes of “Far and Away“, a movie about two young Irish people who leave Ireland looking for freedom and riches in America.

    3. Choice as to what you produce as a result of your research.

Homework

  1. Choose four claims from chapters 4-7 in the textbook, find detailed evidence for them, and (if necessary) given an explanation.
    • This will be a written paper, in academic format.
    • Choose at least one claim of fact (e.g. Margaret Thatcher was the first woman prime minister of Britain) and at last one claim of judgement (e.g. David Beckham is the most famous English footballer).
    • List all your sources of information.
  2. Collect together all your writings for this class and bring them to the last class, July 28th. You will need them to do your final writing.
